Jan Phillips Profile (updated 2007)
* I am happily married with 3 grown children, we have a property west of Brisbane, at Grandchester, since
1996, however I am based mainly in Brisbane at the moment.
* I began quilting in 1988, and have been a Queensland Quilter’s Inc .member since 1991. I was on the
management committee approximately 3 years whilst holding various positions. I attend the monthly
meetings in Brisbane, and support the group in any way I can, as I believe strongly in the aims and
objectives of the group.
* I became an accredited tutor in Basic Patchwork & Quilting, in the first course run by Queensland
Quilter’s Inc in 1996-7, and since then I have been teaching at groups & shops around Ipswich & Brisbane
and in neighbouring country areas. I have recently joined the steering committee for the accreditation
program.
* I have taught at retreats and at group venues and also in private homes around South East Queensland,
including my skillbuilder groups at my home sewing studio. I currently conduct 10 monthly regular groups
between Brisbane and Gatton and Sunshine coast, whilst also holding classes in many different
places on request, these have included country retreats at Roma, Emerald, Hughendon & Rockhampton.
Although a lot of my workshops are for new quilters, many of these students are now needing more
advanced workshops in many areas of Patchwork, Quilting, design and embelishment. Many group
workshops are tailored to suit group needs, often teaching two or three classes at same time.
* For the past 10 years I have organized quilt retreats, with as many as 5 in a year, . These have become a
great social weekend, with lots of laughter, new friendships established, and we see many quilts finally
finished.
* Before Quilting days, I taught sewing in many forms from stretch (we owned a Knitwit store in Townsville
for 7 years) to dressmaking & lingere in Brisbane stores.
* My aim is to promote the art and craft of Patchwork and Quilting so that others may get the same
enjoyment from producing quilts and related items as I do, whilst keeping it an affordable craft.
